I recently read this book after coming across a website advertising an early intervention program being used based on these seven essential skills. It is a fantastic read for educators and for parents. Each chapter describes how the individual skills are important to lifelong learning and success in education. Suggestions are also given at the end of each chapter on what parents and educators can do to support these skills in children. The essential skills highlighted in this book are:

- Skill four: Making connections
- Skill five: Critical thinking
- Skill six: Taking on challenges
- Skill seven: Self-directed, engaged learning
